Document Summary

Mechanical digestion: physical breakdown of material into smaller pieces. Five factors affecting the rate of reaction (chemical digestion: chemical nature of substances (in digestion, the chemical nature of the food is the given) Increasing velocity (temperature) --> particle collision, chewing faster. Increasing surface area (chewing the food, more room to react) Mouth: both mechanical and chemical digestion begins in the mouth. Mechanical digestion: teeth break up food with the help of water in saliva. Chemical digestion: saliva contains amylase which begins the chemical digestion of carbohydrates. Mucus: saliva contains mucus to bind food together for swallowing and to lubricate so it will pass through esophagus easily. Once food leaves the mouth it is called. Automatic muscle of soft palate (blocks entry into nasal passage) and epiglottis (blocks entry into windpipe) control entry of food into esophagus. Soft palate: blocks entry into upper pharynx/nasal passage. Epiglottis: blocks entry into the trachea (windpipe)
