BIOB34H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 24: Partial Pressure, Respiratory Pigment, Red
Document Summary
Lecture 14: chapter 24 ~ transport of o2 and co2 in body fluids (with an intro to acid-base. Note: b/w = between; rp = respiratory pigment; w/o = without. Heart pumps blood through umbilical cord to placenta. Blood picks up o2 from the blood of mother: this happens in the placenta. Oxygenated blood returns via umbilical cord and circulates the body. The fetus create a different type of hemoglobin from their mother. All respiratory pigments are metalloproteins: proteins that contain metal atoms. Rp"s job is to increase the amount of o2 that can be carried by a unit of blood = increases o2-carrying capcity. Rp changes colour when oxygenated and deoxygenated. Similar to enzymes but differ in a specific way: they don"t modify their primary ligand. Blood carries o2 in 2 ways: chem combo with pigment and simple solution. Blood with hemoglobin is much more efficient than blood w/o hemoglobin. Synthesize and break down intracellular nitric oxide (in muscle)
