BIOB50H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Tenuis Consonant, Field Experiment, Nutrient Cycle
Document Summary
Case study (deformity and decline in amphibian population) In august of 1995 a group of kids doing research on frogs discovered that 30-40% of frogs ion the pond were deformed. A laboratory experiment tests the role of parasites: pond in california contained deformed frogs that were thought to be deformed because of pollutants however none of these ponds contained pollutants. Later it was discovered that the snail helisoma tenuis is the first intermediate host for the parasite to complete its life cycle. In the control group 88% survived and none of them had deformities. It was confirmed that the parasite was the cause of the deformities and could be held responsible for some of the amphibian population decline. Multiple factors influence frog deformities: researchers suspected that other factors influenced deformities. Joseph kiesecker conducted a field experiment three of the cages had a mesh through which.
