CLAA06H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter Blackboard PDF: Logos, Deductive Reasoning
Document Summary
Mythos : word , discourse , account ; in short, a (unbelievable) story or a myth. For homer and hesiod, the word mythos did indicate a story, but not an unbelievable one. However, mythos should not be defined exclusively as as only a story. If a story was deemed to be false , the correct term to use would be deceptive or skolios. Old epic poetry accounts or discourses that were deemed authoritative were known as mythoi. Mythos (in epics) is an assertive and authoritative discourse, such as triumphant war speeches made. Mythos suggests a reliable subject in a way that is very similar to the term logos ( reason ) by heroes or achilles arguing with agamemnon rather than mythos. Works dating back to 450 ad use the terms mythoi and logoi synonymously, showing that myth. As such, the term myth was viewed positively and reason were not thought of as opposite definitions.
