Oxbow lake are loop-like rivers where the water has eroded a short cut from one end of the loop to the other. Floodplains is the area near the river that is most likely to be flooded: due to the silt from the floods, these areas are extremely fertile. Wetlands are systems that combine elements of fresh water and dry land and they are very rich and productive. 4/25/16: fresh water marshes allow for plants to grow above the water, swamps also have shallow water but they are located in forests, bogs are ponds covered with thick mats of floating vegetation. Oligotrophic lakes have low nutrients and high oxygen conditions can become high in nutrients and low in oxygen (eutrophic waters) Makes up for 1/5 of earth"s freshwater. Confined aquifers are when they are trapped between two layers of rock. Unconfined aquifers are when they have no top layer pushing down on them.
