Document Summary

Chapter 6:igneous rocks, intrusive activity, and the origin of igneous rocks. Basalt is an igneous rock which is a type of rock that has solidified from magma/ Magma is molten rock. (rich in silicacontains dissolved gases. Lava = magma . its called lava when it is on the surface. Igneous rocks can either be extrusive (form on the surface) or intrusive ( solidified underground) Granite is and intrusive rock made out of feldspar and quartz. Mineralogically and chemically, intrusive rocks are essentially identical to volcanic rocks. Volcanic rocks are fine grained due to rapid solidification. They are generally coarse grained which means that the magma crystallized slowly underground. Some minerals only form over high temperatures and pressure (deeply buried). Examining intrusive contacts. ( contact is a surface separating different rock types) Country rock is a term for any older rock into which an igneous body intruded.
