Naturally occurring rocks and minerals that make up our planet. They are the building blocks upon which our society is built. Identify main types of rocks found in ontario. Differentiate rock types using their mineralogy and textural characteristics and describe how rocks transform from one type to another. Coarse grained: these rocks have large crystals visible with the naked eye. Fine grained: these rocks mainly have small crystals that are not easily visible with the naked eye. Felsic: rocks with felsic compositions are rich in silica and iron, they are typically light coloured and have low density. Intermediate: rocks have composition between mafic and felsic. Mafic: mafic rocks are low in silica but rich in magnesium and iron, they are dark-coloured and are more dense than felsic rocks. Ultra-mafic: composed of almost entirely magnesium and iron bearing minerals, mostly found in the mantle. Y axis: represents the relative proportion of commonly found minerals in percent in each rock type.
