GGRB05H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Contingent Work, Labour Power, Job Sharing
Document Summary
Chapter 5: labor and the city urban geography. Labor geographies is a reference to the variety of ways in which workers are organized across space and how, in turn, space shapes workers" organizations (e. g. , trades unions). For example, the membership of national trades unions representing the service sector might be made up of workers mainly based in major cities where service industries are concentrated. As a result, trade union practices and policies can reflect urban service workers" interests, such as their demandsfor a living wage. Dynamic dependencies refers to the complex, intimate and evolving relationships between employers, employees, and the social geography of the city. It used to be the case that the labor requirements of local employers were studied separately from the patterns of social life in the city. However, urban geographers now recognize that employers are very dependent on exploiting the social dynamics linking the workplace to the living place.
