Critiques of HP
1. HP is everybody’s business and nobody’s responsibility!
2. HP regulates lifestyle and choice, by using coercive action enshrined in legislation
and leads to a “nanny state” society!
•Nanny state— one that overprotects its members by reliance on welfare state and
legislation to limit choice I nth e best interest of the health populations !
•i.e. enforcing of the wearing of seatbelt!
3. HP doesn’t work!
• Relates to a weaker evidence base compared to biomedical practice !
4. Health education is the main approach used within health promotion practice !
