The immune system recognizes materials that are foreign to the body. Immune system protects the body against disease causing organisms and nonliving substances that gain access to it via air, food, and water. Immunity: is what you call the immune system protecting individuals from disease by recognizing and eliminating potential pathogenic agents including bacteria, bacterial toxins, viruses, parasites, and fungi. The immune system also disposes unneeded components of the body, including: aging cells and cellular debris present in diseased tissue; participates in wound healing and sometimes recognizes and eliminates mutant cells that may develop cancer. Immune system also rejects tissues and cells that are not identical to the (cid:862)self(cid:863) this rejection is the primary problem with organ transplantation. Immune response: a complex series of physiological events that culminates in the destruction and elimination of these substances. The presence of something foreign or an abnormal substance induces the immune system to develop an immune response.
