Instrumental traits:personality characteristics that reflect active involvement with environment; stereotypically associated with men. Expressive traits:personality characteristic that reflect emotional functioning; stereotypically associated with women. Traits are not regarded the same way worldwide (e. g. aggression, gentleness) Canadians among most extreme in gender stereotyping for some traits, compared to other countries (p. 273) Important to remember that children influence and are influenced by their environment. People label traits with gender, but a child is rigid on social roles if the parents have been rigid about social roles. Gender identity: perception of oneself as either male or female (p. 274).
