Queer theory: interdisciplinary perspective; seeks to disrupt socially constructed systems of meaning surrounding human sexuality. Sexuality: enduring emotional, romantic or sexual attraction towards others based on their gender/sex. Americans interpret sexuality according to binary of homosexuality or heterosexuality. Queer theorists believe: this is too simplistic. I. e. : nothing inherently heterosexual abt a woman who has sex w/men. And just like assuming genders roles= biological-> assuming that homo/heterosexuality represents human sexuality= results in unequal social systems. Heteronormativity: system of inequality; perpetuates binary understanding of heterosexuality & homosexuality-> where heterosexuality= privileged. Binary b/w homo & heterosexuality= not as clearly visible as binary b/w male & female.
