Key concepts: convergence, critical media studies, fragmentation, globalization, mass media, medium, mobility, postmodernity, socialization, theory, simulation, everything we know is learned in two ways: somatically and symbolically. Somatically things we know through direct sensory perception of our environment. We know what things look, smell, feel, sound or taste because we have seen, smelled, felt, heard or tasted them. Symbolically things we know through someone or something. Ex- parent, friend, teacher, textbook, film, tv etc. Medium is derived from the latin word medius which means middle: primary medium for conveying information and ideas was spoken or written word before the invention of mass media. Knowledge could now be recorded for future generations in libraries or religious texts. Social power hinged on literacy and ownership of printed materials. Motion picture and sound recording: edison and his assistant (william dickson) developed the first two new mass media since print. Except for the magnetic tape, everything else was developed by sony and philips.
