Elections held (following the signing of a peace accord) Angolans also wanted an end to the conflict, and hope that the ballot might prove more effective than war. Savimbi wouldn"t have risked the gambit had he not been reasonably confident of winning. Result his unita only won 40. 7 percent of the presidential vote, against 49. 6 for the ruling mpla. As now leader of the opposition, savimbi ended up returning to war. Thousand people dying everyday as result of the renewed conflict. The mpla gov. financed itself from the sale of oil. Savimbi and unita financed itself from the sale of diamonds. Intense international pressure brought the two parties back to the negotiating table.
