CHAPTER 5: Consciousness
SECTION 5.1: Biological Rhythm of Consciousness – Wakefulness & Sleep
AWAKE:
- Consciousness – persons’ subjective awareness, including thoughts, perceptions, experiences of
the world, + self-awareness
- Biological rhythms – neatly adapted to cycles in their environment
o Infradian rhythm – rhythm occurring over a period of time longer than a day
Circannual rhythm – yearly cycle
o Circadian rhythms – internally driven daily cycles of approx. 24 hrs affecting
physiological + behavioural processes
Entrainment- biological rhythms become synch to external cues such as light;
temperature, or even a clock
Endogenous rhythms – generated by our body independent of external cues
such as light
SLEEP:
- Stages of Sleep:
o Polysomnography – a set of measurements used to examine physiological variables
during sleep
o Electroencephalogram (EEG) – device measuring brain activity using sensors attached to
the scalp
Frequency - # of up-down cycles
Amplitude – height + depth of up-down cycles
Beta waves – high-freq, low-amp waves
Alpha waves – slower, larger, predictable waves signal person may be
daydreaming, meditating, or starting to fall asleep
- EEG Stages:
Collectively known as non-REM (NREM) sleep
o Stage 1:
Theta waves (4-8 Hz) - Brain waves slow, become higher amp
Breathing, blood press., heart rate decrease slightly still sensitive to noises
o Stage2: approx. 10-15 min
Brain waves continue to slow
Sleep spindles – clusters of high-freq. low amp.waves
K complexes – small grps of larger amp waves
o Stage 3:
Delta waves – large, looping waves high amp + low freq less than 3Hz
o Stage 4:

Section 5. 1: biological rhythm of consciousness wakefulness & sleep. Consciousness persons" subjective awareness, including thoughts, perceptions, experiences of the world, + self-awareness. Biological rhythms neatly adapted to cycles in their environment. Infradian rhythm rhythm occurring over a period of time longer than a day. Circannual rhythm yearly cycle: circadian rhythms internally driven daily cycles of approx. Entrainment- biological rhythms become synch to external cues such as light; temperature, or even a clock. Endogenous rhythms generated by our body independent of external cues such as light. Stages of sleep: polysomnography a set of measurements used to examine physiological variables during sleep, electroencephalogram (eeg) device measuring brain activity using sensors attached to the scalp. Amplitude height + depth of up-down cycles. Alpha waves slower, larger, predictable waves signal person may be daydreaming, meditating, or starting to fall asleep. Collectively known as non-rem (nrem) sleep: stage 1: Theta waves (4-8 hz) - brain waves slow, become higher amp.
