Developmental psychology: the study of human physical, cognitive, social and behavioural characteristics across the lifespan. A cross sectional design: is used to measure and compare samples of people at different ages at a given time. For example: you can compare different age groups. Can suffer from cohort effects: the differences between people that result from being born in different time periods. Longitudinal design: follows the development of the same set of individuals through time. Suffers from attrition: occurs when participants drop out of study for some reason, such as losing interest or moving away. This design fixes problems for cohort effects. Types of abilities- rapid shifts in thinking and behaving, a transition from stage to stage. Complex interactions between genetics and the environment shape the developmental process. Sensitive period: a window of time during which exposure to a specific type of environmental stimulation is needed for normal development of a specific ability.
