Document Summary
Motivation: concerns the physiological and psychological processes underlying the initiation of behaviours that direct organisms toward specific goals. Motives = initiating factor such as thoughts, feelings, sensations, and bodily processes that lead to goal-directed behaviour. Ex: when the body"s water levels fall below normal, cells release chemical compounds that maintain the structure and fluid levels of cells. Receptors in the body respond to the increased concentration of these compounds, as well as to the lower water volume, and send messages to the brain. The result is the sudden awareness that you are thirsty, which motivates you to drink water. Drive: biological trigger that tells us we may be deprived of something and causes us to seek out what is needed such as food or water. When a drive is satisfied, reward centres in our brain become activated. Our motivation to reduce a drive, or in response to an incentive, can lead to the same behaviour.
