Asylums: residential facilities for the mentally ill. Phillippe pinel, french physician and dorothea dix, us school teacher. Moral treatment which led patients to be treated with kindness and decency. By 1950 over half a million people were in psychiatric hospitals in the us. 1955 chlorpromazine (thorazine in the us) was introduced and people with schizophrenia and other disorders were able to function independently. Success of chlorpromazine and other medications led to widespread deinstitutionalization (impatient numbers dropped 80% over 3 decades) Return of people in regular life increased the number of homeless people (those who quit their medication) Made a difference in symptoms but did not cure them which resulted in several challenges to overcome. Medical model: sees psychological conditions through the same lens as western medicine tends to see physical conditions as sets of symptoms, causes and outcomes with treatments aimed at changing physiological processes in order to alleviate symptoms.
