Fertilization, is the process by which sperm and ovum the male and female gametes, or sex cells combine to create a single cell zygote. In a sexually mature woman, ovulation occurs once every 28 days until menopause. Sperm are produced in the testicles, of a mature man at a rate of several hundred million a day and are ejaculated in the semen at sexual climax. Fertilization typically occurs while the ovum is passing through the fallopian tube. The sperm are absorbed by the (cid:449)o(cid:373)a(cid:374)"s white blood cells and the ovum passes through. If fertilization does not occur the ovum and any sperm (cid:272)ells i(cid:374) the (cid:449)o(cid:373)a(cid:374)"s (cid:271)ody die the uterus and exits through the vagina. The most common cause of infertility in men in a low sperm count or insufficiently motile sperm.
