PSYB32H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Cerebral Cortex, Abnormal Psychology, Action Potential
Document Summary
Medical (disease) model (cid:884) as applied in abnormal psychology, a set of assumptions that conceptualizes abnormal behaviour as similar to physical diseases: the study of abnormal behaviour is linked historically to medicine. For a time, the germ theory was the paradigm of medicine, but it soon became apparent that this theory could not account for all diseases. Psychopathology is viewed as caused by the disturbance of some biological process. Thus, any measure of intelligence is best viewed as an index of the phenotype. Science is bound by: the limitations imposed on scientific inquiry by the current state of knowledge: objectivity vs. subjectivity in understanding abnormal behaviour. Molecular genetics tries to specify the particular gene or genes involved and the precise functions of these genes: each cell has 46 chromosomes (23 pairs) (cid:131) The chromosomes are our genetic material and one of each pair comes from a perso(cid:374)(cid:859)(cid:400)(cid:3) (cid:373)(cid:381)(cid:410)(cid:346)(cid:286)(cid:396)(cid:3) (cid:258)(cid:374)(cid:282)(cid:3) his/her father.
