PSYB32H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Fetus, Blood Test, Intellectual Disability
Document Summary
Genotype--particular set of genes that a person inherits form her parents. With the exception of identical twins, no two people have exactly the same genotype. Phenotype--observable and measurable expression of an individual"s physical and behavioral characteristics. Each reproductive cell contains only 234 single chromosomes instead of the usual 46 because during its development, it undergoes a special form of cell division called meiosis. Dna---ladder-like molecule that stores genetic information in cells and transmits it during reproduction. Mucleotide--compound containing a nitrogen base, simple sugar, and a phosphate group. Only bases that are compatible with each other will bond together. Gene---portion of dna that is located at a particular site on a chromosome and that codes for the production of certain kinds of proteins. Genes never work in isolation, but always in combination with environmental influences. Its coded message cannot be read unless it is embedded in an environment that signals when and how it should respond.
