Withdrawal: negative physical and psychological effects; caused when person stops taking the substance or reduces the amount. The person recognizes excessive use of substance (rare) Much of the person"s time is spent trying to obtain substance or recover from its effects. Person gives up or cuts back participating in many activities because of substances. Substance abuse-less serious diagnosis; person must experience one of the following: Failure to fulfill major obligations e. g work or children. Exposure to physical dangers e. g operating machinery or driving while intoxicated. Legal problems e. g arrests for disorderly conduct or traffic violations. Persistent social or interpersonal problems e. g arguments with spouse. *note: the new dsm-5 dropped the substance dependence category.
