PSYC62H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Rectal Administration, Portal Vein, Gastrointestinal Tract
Document Summary
Methods of drug administration influence the onset of drug action: there r 2 major categories of drug administration methods, enteral methods of administration, use the gastrointestinal (gi) tract. Infants: vomiting patients, unconscious patients, unable to take medic"n orally. Intraperitoneal (ip) injection is rarely used w/ humans and is more common among small lab animals: the drug is injected thru the abd"al wall into the peritoneal cav -- space which surr"s the adb"al organs. Implanon and nexplanon, which are contained in a rod which is then implanted under the skin of the upper arm. Sublingual administration inv"s placing the drug under the tongue, where it contacts w/ the mucous membr and is abs"d rapidly into a rich capillary network. Intranasal abs"n can also be achieved w/o dissolving the drug - e. g. , direct application of finely powdered cocaine to nasal mucosa by sniffing leads to quick abs"n, w/ effects on the cns which peak in 15-30 mins.
