SOCA01H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: George Herbert Mead, Randall Collins, Nonverbal Communication
Document Summary
Researchers decided to eavesdrop on two-person groups and in each group they monitored two separate groups: variable 1: those who laughed. (speaker/listener/both, variable 2: gender of speaker/listener. Competence occurs when speaker (women), and listener (man). Males are less likely to seek assistance, because it appears as though their authority/intelligence is lower. In summary, the gender-conflict seems to arise as a result of differences. Social interaction: people communicating face-to-face via computer/acting/reacting in relation to other people. Structured around norms, roles, and statuses: feminists are sensitive to this. Status: recognized social position an individual can occupy: high status men, have more laughs, low status women, have more laughs, social structures determine who laughs more, our social status is one of three building blocks. There are roles and norms: roles: expected behaviour. People occupy this: norms: accepted ways of doing. They believe that our emotions are most definitely controlled/supressed.
