SOCA02H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Jeremy Bentham, Acquaintance Rape, Mass Media
Document Summary
Chapter 7 deviance and crime: 167. Rules for greeting people vary widely from one country to the next and among different cultural groups within one country (swanson et al. , 2014) No act is deviant in itself, people commit deviant acts only when they break a norm and cause others to react negatively. Deviance involves breaking a norm and evoking a negative reaction from others. Crime is deviance that breaks a law, which is a norm stipulated and enforced by government bodies. Just as deviance is relative, crime is too. What is considered a crime at one time and place may be considered normal in another time and place: 168. Serious acts of deviance are typically punished either informally/formally. Informal punishment involves a mild sanction that is imposed during face-to-face interaction, not by the judicial system. People who are stigmatized are negatively evaluated because of a marker that distinguishes them from others (goffman, 1963) and that is labelled as socially unacceptable.
