Hooking up is a pathway to dating relationships. Sexless dates are seen as women withholding from sex and men are seen as being on a pity date. Contrary to the sexual script, women accorded to the sexual agency and desire in the hookup and validated men"s post hookup relationship with interest. Hooking up has replaced courtship and is a primary way in which college students come about forming committed relationships. Sexual double standards shape hookup behaviours and experiences. Women are judged negatively, men are judged positively. Hookups are used as an outlet for sexual agency outside of committed relationships. Men initiate dates and have a high degree of agency(act to produce a particular result) in regards to relationship building. In the past, dates were used as indicators of continuing into a committed relationship. Formal dates have now become less imperative in terms of ways of getting to know each other. Casual dating to exclusive relationship to sexual interaction.
