Document Summary

Stab22 - chapter 12: from randomness to probability. For example, when tossing a coin twice, the sample space is: Event (a): is an outcome or set of outcomes. For example, the event of obtaining exactly one head from the above example is: Trial: the occasions upon which a phenomenon is observed. Independent: when the outcomes of trials do not affect one another. This means, the outcome of one coin toss does not affect the outcome of the second coin toss. Law of large numbers (lln): as the number of trials increase, the relative frequency of outcomes becomes a limiting value. Probability: it is a number between 0 and 1 that reports the likelihood of an event. It is a long-term frequency of an event"s occurrence. Theoretical probability: is the probability that depends upon a model. Personal probability: are probabilities that are not used based on mathematical models or long- term frequencies, but instead upon everyday situations.
