The smallest meaningful units in language are called morphemes. Zero morpheme: lack of sound that creates meaning. Bound morpheme: same morphemes pronounced differently when found with other morphemes within the same word. Allomorph: variant of a morpheme ( san, sane, nation), positional variants of a morpheme.
