Document Summary
Cell junctions, cell adhesions and the extracellular matrix. Cell-cell adhesion: tie the cytoplasm of many cells together. Connective tissue: (bone or tendon) are cells distributed in the extracellular matrix. Epithelial tissues: line the gut or the epidermal covering of the skin; made up of layers called the epithelia. Adherens junctions anchor sites for actin filaments. Desmosome junctions are anchor sites for intermediate filament. Hemidesmosome: anchor intermediate filaments to extracellular matrix. Each of the 4 types of protein play a role in transmembrane adhesion proteins. These proteins can be divided into two groups. Caderins mediate ca2+-dependent cell-cell adhesion in all animals. The cadherin superfamily in vertebrates includes hundreds of different proteins,
