I think the key argument of the anderson reading is that the pilgrimages caused by colonial education (difficulties in obtaining a colonial education) formed a sense of solidarity amongst the youth (intelligentsias) who were being educated. This creation of solidarity was in part helped by the racist tendencies of the colonists, as well as the development of the curriculum as bilingual (shown in the franco-vietnamese case). This solidarity played a key role in the development of nationalism exceeding colonial-nationalism attempted to be instilled through colonial education. Post world war 2 heralded a rise in nation-building policies, instilling nationalist ideology through mass media, education etc. Physical limitations on journeying no longer played a role as they were solved through advancements in rail and such. Education became of higher importance as these colonial states developed. Intelligentsias central to rise of nationalism in colonial territories . Literacy meant access to western ideologies and models of nationalism and nationness and nation states.
