Utility: each ind. is trying to maximize some measure of personal of the satisfaction gained from consumption of goods and services. Person"s utility depends on the things that person consumers. Individual consumption: set of all goods and services that a person consumes. Utility function: relationship between an ind. consumption bundle and total amount of utility it makes for the person. Personal matter; two people will have different utility functions. Utility function shows the fact that when people consume, they keep in mind their tastes and preferences more or less in a rational way. To maximize total utility, consumers must focus on the marginal utility. Marginal utility: change in total utility from consuming one additional good/service. Marginal utility slopes downwards: consumption of one more item leads to a less total utility. Consumption of most goods & services is subject to diminishing marginal utility. Explains why people reach limit at an all-you-can-eat buffet.
