EEB215H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Marine Resources Conservation, Ecosystem Services, Buffer Zone
Document Summary
Ways of establishing areas: government action. Often on regional and local levels: land purchases and easements by private individuals and conservation organizations, actions of indigenous peoples and traditional societies, development of biological field stations by universities and other research organizations. Traditional societies also establish protected areas to maintain ways of life or preserve their land. Iucn has developed six categories for classifying protected areas: lands in categories i-iv is strictly protected, v, vi areas are considered multiple-use or multi-management protected areas. Administered to conserve biodiversity, but also produce natural resources. All types (i-vi) more likely to have a positive impact on local people than a negative impact. Multi-use protected areas (v, vi) were most likely to have positive conswenersvation and socioeconomic outcomes large countries with rich biotas and variety of ecosystems benefit from having various protected areas. Measurements of protected areas are only approximate: sometimes laws protecting them are not strictly enforced.
