John grimes: 14 years old, dealing with his feelings about the church and his (step)father. Gabriel: a hard, religious man who previously lived a very sinful life. Married deborah, who could give him no children. Had an affair with esther and gave birth to a son, royal. Then marries elizabeth, and has a new son, roy. Elizabeth: raised by a strict, religious aunt. Ran away to be with her boyfriend richard, who killed himself. She is pregnant and unwed, and later gives birth to john.
