FOR201H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Seed Dispersal, Thrips, Seed Predation
Document Summary
Chapter 12 - the blooming rainforest, how flowering plants reproduce: Pollination syndromes : are a combination of associated traits that attract particular pollination groups. In temperate regions, annual flowering is determined by seasonal cues. In aseasonal tropics, environmental cues are less apparent. Reproductive phenological variability is expressed by differences among species in the frequency of flowering events, their duration, and timing. Specialization maintains high species diversity by providing mechanisms for reproductive isolation. The presence of specialist pollination mutualisms are broadly similar in temperate and tropical systems. Species seen as pollinator specialists in a specific region may be generalists at a wider range. Outcrossing is primarily used, meaning that plants are dependent on pollen transfer. Large distances between individuals isn"t a barrier to pollen exchange. Self-fertilization uses a lot of resources, but ensures reproduction in stressful conditions. Spatial separation of male and female functions can be used as a technique to avoid self-fertilization.
