GGR205H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Public Culture, The Monkey Wrench Gang, Media Manipulation
Document Summary
All cultural groups have their own pop-culture. Pop-culture is the sum of performance, expression, & symbolism (i. e. torn blue jeans, graphic novels, dolls) all hold meaning. Plays vital role in cultural identity and social well-being-->influenced by gender class, & ethnic divisions (ex. Bridal showers= chinese vs. nuer-->both symbolize economic joining of families but different in traditions) Line between consumerism and pop-culture is blurred like garage sales (commercial endeavour) and buying movies=similar. However the social aspects of movement and meeting friends at garage sales make it pop-culture. 2 schools of thoughts on pop-culture=mass culture theory & populist theory. Mass culture theory=high culture (rich people stuff) supposedly more valuable & enlightening than those in mindless masses who absorb without critique=opiate for masses. Populist theory=pop-culture as a pursuit for extrinsic and intrinsic rewards and place for escape where consumers choose to accept or rejects based on individual needs and desires.
