Document Summary

Chapter 3 - empirical facts and philosophical conceptual facts. Facts based on observation are often referred to as empirical facts. Believe the pencil continues to exist in the drawer even when we"re not perceiving it. Belief about pencil on the desk is based on direct observational evidence, whereas belief that there"s a pencil in the drawer cannot be based such direct observational evidence. One belief is based on direct observational evidence, while another stems largely from our views on the sort of world we live in. Though we tend to have the same depth of conviction in each of the beliefs, there is a substantial difference in the reasons we have for believing in them. Although people believed theories were reasonably clear empirical facts, they were actually based more on philosophical/conceptual convictions about the sort of world the people involved inhabited. Greeks in 1600s believed that the planets and other heavenly spheres moved in perfect circular and uniform motion.
