LIN251H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Franglais, American Anthropologist, Das Rheingold
Document Summary
Foundation of socioling is that speakers have choices. Variety: a relatively distinguishable form of a lang, often based on geographical/social differences (ex. Aave vs european american english: looser than the term dialect", better encompasses genres and registers. Code: the range of lang resources that speakers use, from distinct langs to varieties. Repertoire: the suite of codes a speaker can draw on; ling range of an individual or small group: used to cover fluid lang changes (esp. by young speakers in ethnically diverse urban situations translanguing/metrolingualism) All normal adult speakers can control 1+ variety of their lang. Notion begins with leonard bloomfield"s 1933 book, then was picked up in the 60"s by hymes, Gumpere added the inflection of multilingualism, as hymes did way of speaking and communicative competence, and how labov did ling evaluation and style shifting. All 3 required influence from social (esp. Hymes) and ling criteria, but social tends to come first.
