NFS284H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Omega-3 Fatty Acid, Prospective Cohort Study, Glycemic Index
Document Summary
Dietary fibre, glycemic index and type 2 diabetes. A prospective cohort study is done to determine if there is an association between glycemic index, dietary fibre and type 2 diabetes. The health outcome being evaluated was the incidence of type 2 diabetes. Young and middle aged women were observed for 8 years. The dietary components of interest were foods of high and low gi, foods high in cereal fibre. Results: as gi increased, risk of type 2 diabetes increased; as cereal fibre intake increased, risk of type 2 diabetes decreased. Therefore we can conclude that the incidence of type 2 diabetes is associated with increased gi and decreased fibre intake. This is an observational study, not an interventional trial; meaning that we cannot infer causation. These results make sense: type 2 diabetes is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. Low gi foods and fibre (esp soluble fibres), tend to reduce blood glucose levels.
