Reading 3. 4: mini-brains and human-mouse hybrids reveal what"s happening inside. The obama administration used new technologies and various model organisims from round worms to mice to advance the field of neuroscience. Because using the human brain is too complex and poses an ethical issue. Researchers are investigating how stem cells (cells that have the ability to become any type of cell) can organize them selves and wire themselves in parts of the brain. In order to fully understand the brain, it needs to be studied rigorously under a microscope and since they cant just put a person under a microscope they need to have a model of the brain. Mice have been useful and will continue to be but as it gets more complex, its important to understand the differences between us and mice. This is where stem cells come into play as they can be manipulated to preform these processes but its still too early.
