Document Summary

Crystallization - obscuring the true qualities of the love object and instead seeing her as an incarnation of the ideal. Bootstrapping - she is perfect because i love her and i love her because she is perfect. The platonic requirement - idealization of the object - the true object of affection can never be attained in real life because it is otherworldly, but the temptation is to believe that the loved one is the ideal. Anti-platonic requirement - love must be focused on a singular, particular individual. Repetition and transference new love interests are never really new; they are simply patterns learned in childhood. There is a teleology of love, since people who are committed to strict monogamy still experience sexual temptations and resist those temptations. They resist those temptations because there is a teleology of sexual emotions they are supposed to be exclusive and overwhelming.
