POL207Y1 Chapter : machiavellis views on the republic.docx
Document Summary
Once conquered the prince will find in the people a refuge to protect his own state. However, in republics the situation is quite complicated. In republics there is greater life in relation to memory related to virtue. A republic poses a particular issue for the prince since the legacy carried by former republics still lives in the people"s memory. It is difficult for a prince to maintain a principality that has been accustomed to its past, previous traditions. Mv conflicts cannot be resolved ethically; they are not resolved on the basis of future promises or on the idea of justice. Conflicts bare the most sensitive emotional plots ranging from social, historical and political platforms and in both cases of a prince and a republic institutions must be held accountable. Mv says conflicts cannot be resolved morally or ethically and that politics is not about reconciliation but rather about the possibilities that conflict might find political space within institutions.
