Hypnosis: inducing heightened state of suggestibility: cannot force subjects to do something against their will- subjects won"t comply with suggestion. Challenge suggestions: actions not supposed to be performed. Interaction b/w automatic (unconscious) thoughts and behaviours & supervisory system (executive processing) Dissociation theory: unique state where consciousness is divided- an observer & hidden observer: observer (automatic)- things that go on w/o much conscious processing, hidden observer (executive functions)- slows down, hypnotist"s suggestions replace executive functions. Like flow state- mastery of a skill- perform it automatically, no need for much executive functioning: support: Social-cognitive theory: beliefs and expectations contribute to increased suggestibility: expectations experience, response expectancy: individual believes will hurt more, respond that procedure hurt more, support: Brain areas related to executive functioning- stronger connections in more hypnotizable people > less hypnotizable people. Has promise, esp. when combined with proven beneficial medical treatments.
