Document Summary
3. 3 structure and organization of the nervous system. Central nervous system (cns) consists of the brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord receives information from the brain and stimulates the nerves that extend out into the body; this stimulation produces movements. It is also involved in receiving information from sensory nerves and relaying it back to the brain (aka causing reflexes) Peripheral nervous system (pns) a division of the nervous system that transmits signals between the brain and the rest of the body and is divided into two subcomponents, the somatic system and the autonomic system. Somatic nervous system consists of nerves that control skeletal muscles which are responsible for voluntary and reflexive movement (so when you wiggle your finger, it involves the somatic nervous system) Autonomic nervous system the portion of the pns responsible for regulating the activity of organs and glands (ex. you wouldn"t voluntarily make your heart beat so the autonomic nervous system deals with that)
