PSY220H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Social Forces, Upper Class
Document Summary
Prejudice a negative prejudgment about a person just because they belong to a group (essentially a negative attitude) Stereotypes beliefs about the personal attributes of an entire group of people. Stereotypes can be overgeneralized, inaccurate, and resistant to new information. They may sometimes be correct but do not explain causation (ex. Women are not usually engineers not because they have a bad biological predisposition to math but it"s more the social forces around them) Woman with titles as ms. used to be seen as more assertive. Now that ms. is standard it is now women who keep their last name are seen as assertive. European cultures different from their own in a unique and stereotypical way (ex. Germans are hard working) southern europeans seen more expressive than northerners. Overt discrimination and overt prejudice has decreased over time. When hooked up to a lie detector, people admit prejudice but when not hooked up, they hide it.
