Somatic symptom disorders complain of bodily symptoms that suggest physical defect or dysfunction but no physiological basis can be found. Overlap between physical and psychological functioning students who had somatic syndrome also had anxiety syndrome. Psychological problems with physical form: physical problems are not under voluntary control, no known physiological explanation. Dsm iv conversion, somatization, pain, body dysmorphic, hypochondriasis disorder. Dsm 5 somatization, conversion, pain disorder & hypochondriasis are no longer distinct disorders. Somatoform disorders have been highly contested: terminology not accepted by patients, incompatible with some cultures, lots of heterogeneity amongst disorders, lack of symptoms needed for diagnosis. Dsm-5 renamed somatization disorder, hypochondriasis, pain disorder, undifferentiated somatoform disorder as somatic symptom disorders group disorders into single section based on similarity of symptoms: focus on how the shared symptoms causes distress and impairment. Three somatoform disorders: bdd, somatization & hypochondriasis (illness anxiety disorder) Dsm-5 also includes illness anxiety disorder high degree of anxiety about health, but somatic symptoms are mild.
