Attention: ability to focus on specific stimuli / locations (which simultaneously implies the withdrawal of attention from certain stimuli) Selective attention: attending to 1 thing while ignoring others. Distraction: 1 stimulus interfering w/ process of another stimulus. Divided attention: paying attention to more than 1 thing. Attentional capture: rapid shifting of attention, usually caused by a sudden addition of a strong stimulus. Visual scanning: movement from the eyes from 1 location to another. Cocktail party effect: ability of people to selectively listen to 1 stimulus. Also known as the bottleneck model, b/c the filter restricts information flow: however, unlike a bottle, not all of the information can pass through. Filter is only supposed to let through 1 message, but we see that people are still able to detect certain important messages in the unattended ear. These messages were also analyzed, to know their meaning! Dichotic listening task: unattended ear presented the subject"s own name.
