Document Summary

The final stage of memory in the modal model is long-term memory (ltm) Theoretically, this store is limitless and there is no known capacity limit on ltm. Important process of memory is retrieval similar to that of stm. While stm retains the specific physical details of the sensory stimulus first used to encode the information, ltm typically retains the abstracted semantic information, without specific physical details. Sometimes, certain memorable and oft-repeated details can be stored in long-term memory. Ex: recalling the words of a song or a poem verbatim. The behavioral differences between stm and ltm suggest that they may be distinct memory symptoms, as proposed in the modal model of memory. This possibility is supported by neuropsychological data as well from patients with amnesia, severely impaired long-term memory capacities due to trauma or brain damage. Retrograde amnesia: individuals who suffer trauma where the affected person has difficulty remember information from before the onset of amnesia.
