Studying the mind: early work in cognitive psychology. Cognitive psychology- scientific study of the mind: determining properties and mechanisms of the mind. The mind creates and controls mental functions such as perception, attention, memory, emotions, language, deciding, thinking, and reasoning: has a central role in determining various mental abilities, cognition- mental processes the mind does. The mind is a system that creates representations of the world so that we can act within it to achieve our goals: important for functioning and survival. 1800s- not possible to study the mind: properties of the mind cannot be measured. Francis donders- did one of first cognitive psychology experiments: interest: how long it takes to make a decision, method: measured reaction time-how long it takes to respond to presentation of a stimulus. Asked participants to press a button upon presentation of a light simple reaction time.
