Document Summary

There are 3 standard psychophysiological bases for defining stages of sleep: Chapter fourteen: eeg (eledtroencephalogram, eog (electrooculogram, emg (electromyogram) The first night phenomenon is the disturbance of sleep observed during the first night in a sleep lab. This is why patients usually sleep a couple nights in the lab before the study. There are 3 stages of sleep eeg: stage 1, stage 2, stage 3: alpha waves are waxing and waning bursts of 8-12 hz eeg waves. Eeg waves, with a frq of 1-2 hz. These 3 stages are a cycle we repeat. The initial stage 1 eeg (the first period of stage. 1 eeg) doesn"t have any emg or eog changes. Emergent stage 1 eegs however are accompanied by rems and a loss of tone in the muscles of our core. Each cycle is about 90 minutes long; and as night progresses, we spend more and more time in emergent stage 1 sleep.
