Civil juries are not used at all in quebec"s civil law system. The canadian criminal code divides offenses into 3 categories. Summary offences the least serious offences, tried in a lower court by a judge alone, the accused has no right to a jury trial (e. g. disturbing piece, solicitation of prostitution, assault) Punishable by no more than 6 months in jail. For certain summary offences like assault with a weapon, maximum sentence can be 18 months.
